Football Summit Meeting
On 20 September 2011, Minister of Sport and Tourism Adam Giersz met with a delegation of the Association of European Professional Football Leagues which represents the interests of 30 European football leagues grouping nearly 1000 clubs. The meeting was held within the consultations under the Polish Presidency of the EU Council on the Polish priorities in the field of sport, which include fight against match-fixing and good governance in sport.
The meeting with Minister of Sport and Tourism Adam Giersz was attended by Sir Dave Richards, Chairman of EPFL and Chairman of FA Premier League, Frederic Thiriez, President of Ligue 1, Jose Luis Astiarazan, President of Primera Division, Marco Brunelli, Director General of Serie A, representatives of the Swiss, Portuguese and Russian leagues and representatives of Polish Ekstraklasa.
The consultations held so far under the Presidency with representatives of the world of football, in which the opinions of EPFL and the European Club Association were sought, highlighted the existing conflict of interests between UEFA, the clubs’ representatives and the leagues’ representatives. All the groups expect the Polish Presidency to take steps towards finding a compromise taking into account the interests of each of the parties.
