Good year for Polish sport

2014 was undoubtedly a truly good year for Polish sport. Numerous events, including those held in our country, gave the fans a remarkable dose of positive emotions, bringing sporting successes for Polish athletes.

Below is a TOP 10 list of 2014 sporting events according to Minister of Sport and Tourism Andrzej Biernat.

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games: two gold medals for Kamil Stoch (normal and large ski jumping hills); a gold medal for Justyna Kowalczyk (10 km classic cross-country ski race); a gold medal for Zbigniew Bródka (1500m speed skating event), a silver medal for the women's team (Bachleda-Curuś, Woźniak, Złotkowska, Czerwonka) and a bronze medal for the men's team (Szymański, Niedźwiedzki, Bródka) in speed skating;

Winning the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Poland 2014;

The historic 2:0 victory over the German team at the National Stadium, and the 1st place after 4 rounds in the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying group;

Anita Włodarczyk’s world record in hammer throw in Berlin: 79.58m;

Michał Kwiatkowski’s UCI Road Race World Championship;

Rafał Majka’s victory in the 71st Tour de Pologne; winning two stages in the 101st Tour de France, and victory in the mountain classification of the Tour;

Agnieszka Radwańska in 2014 Australian Open semi-final;

A large number of medals at the Zurich 2014 European Athletics Championships: Anita Włodarczyk (hammer throw gold), Adam Kszczot (800m run gold), Krystian Zalewski (3000m steeplechase silver), Artur Kuciapski (800 m run silver), Paweł Fajdek (hammer throw silver ), Yared Shegumo (marathon silver), Paweł Wojciechowski (pole vault silver), Joanna Fiodorow (hammer throw bronze), Joanna Jóźwik (800 m run bronze), Tomasz Majewski (shot put bronze), Robert Urbanek (discus throw bronze) and 4x400 men’s relay race (bronze);

Polish swimmers’ successes at the 2014 European Aquatics Championships: Konrad Czerniak (100m butterfly gold and 50m freestyle bronze), Radosław Kawęcki (200m backstroke gold) and Paweł Korzeniowski (200m butterfly bronze), and at the Doha 2014 World Short Course Championships: Radosław Kawęcki (200m backstroke gold and 100m backstroke silver) and Paweł Korzeniowski (200m butterfly bronze);
