Minister Giersz in Brussels
The CULT (Culture and Education) Committee of the Parliament is responsible for matters concerning education, culture, youth, sport as well as cultural and educational aspects of the EU’s media policy.
During the six-month presidency of the Council of the EU, the Polish priority in the field of sport will be “Development of new European initiatives in the field of sport”. In pursuing this priority Poland undertook to contribute to the development of new EU competence by tackling following current topics:
- threats to the integrity of sport
- the social dimension of sport
- sports policy based on economic facts
– The European Union’s primary objective is to support the development of sport in its social and educational dimension – said Minister Adam Giersz at the meeting of the European Parliament’s CULT Committee. – We have taken this into account it in our priorities. However, the very idea of sport and its inherent values lose their meaning if its integrity is violated. The Polish Presidency centres its priorities around the ambitious challenge of fighting for broadly understood clean sport. In addition, we intend to focus on sport’s significant impact on the economy. Sport is a sector which generates not only expenditure but also measurable benefits for Member States’ economies and therefore deserves support and investment contribution.
